Sibur says mulls creating 250,000 tn synthetic fiber production

MOSCOW, Dec 16 (PRIME) -- Russian petrochemical holding Sibur is considering switching some existing capacities to production of 100,000 tonnes of polyester threads and fibers per year or build a plant for production of 250,000 tonnes of the products, Deputy Industry and Trade Minister Viktor Yevtukhov said in a news conference on Thursday.

“Sibur plans to design a textile production cluster in one of the regions of our country together with Bosco. Sibur is considering giving new functions to the existing production facilities to produce 100,000 tonnes of polyester threads and fibers per year or building a new plant that would produce 250,000 tonnes per year,” he said.

Almost all Russian textile industry suffers from interruptions of production, and the lack of their own raw materials, including synthetic fibers, is one of the reasons. The government understands that, and creation of national ventures that would make synthetic fiber and products from synthetic fiber is a strategic issue, Yevtukhov said.

Russia imports almost two and a half times more synthetic fiber than produces, this is why the Russian authorities will support the companies that would like to enter the segment. The government will help them create new ventures and search for the sales markets, he said.
